The Pull of Life

‘Happiness is being on the beam with life - to feel the pull of life.’

— Agnes Martin

I have been staring up at the sky a lot lately. Watching the clouds wander this way and that; drinking in the stars. As the seasons begin to shift, I love to take note of the differences in light and colour. It stirs up a lot of emotion and I think this must be what it feels like to experience the pull of life. To notice that mysterious swirl of unseen forces, which govern our basic existence and fuel our creative inspiration.

I read somewhere that to be human is to be connected to nature. So, in other words, tuning into the natural world is an essential part of our humanity. ‘We often forget that we are nature,’ Andy Goldsworthy. ‘Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.’

When that connection is intact, though, there is an unmistakable sense of vitality and drive. It can be witnessed, for example, in the mysterious creativity that bubbles up from the unknown and flows right through us, as if we are human conduits of something divine. ‘There’s a time for certain ideas to arrive,’ writes Rick Rubin, ‘and they find a way to express themselves through us.’

So what does it mean to ride this wavelength? To feel its magnetic pull, inspiring you to feel, act, and create. Certainly there have been many inspiring creatives throughout history that have, if not understood this process, then at least been open enough to surrender to it.

Chapter Fifteen is an open letter to those creatives; to the loyal companions and champions of art practice and the artful in life. It is an ode to the icons and ambassadors of art, culture, and literature—like Coco Chanel, Pharrell Williams, and Patti Smith. The ones who continue to shape the ways in which we create today. And who are unequivocally on the beam with life.

Tap into those unseen forces, in all their vitality and drive. Stare bravely into the abyss and choose to take the leap—if for no other reason than we are all alive together. And life is made for living.

This chapter of JANE PRIVÉE is your invitation to create art for art’s sake—the sky is the limit.
